Jameel McClain: 2nd-Round Tender A Compliment

In the NFL, some players get upset when they are tagged with a restricted free-agent status, but Jameel McClain is happy to have the chance to stick with the Ravens.

Currently in limbo as a four-year veteran because of the NFL lockout, McClain isn’t sure if he’ll be restricted or unrestricted, with the ability to sign with any team.

But, since the Ravens have given McClain a second-round tender, which is an honor considering the linebacker’s history as an unsigned rookie free agent, he is content with his situation.

“It’s a step in that direction,” McClain recently told reporters last week.  “I’m excited in the confidence that the Ravens have in me and I’m here to show them that I’m going to keep working every day. That’s just my game, that’s all I know.

“That’s never going to change. It’s definitely a compliment.”

It’s also a compliment considering McClain’s competition for the spot next to Pro Bowl linebacker Ray Lewis the past two seasons. In 2008, McClain didn’t start any games as a linebacker. In 2009, Tavares Gooden started 12 games at the position while Dannell Ellerbe started three and McClain started one.

But last season, McClain seemingly took over by starting 15 games alongside Lewis, finishing third on the team with 91 tackles.

After three years of service with the Ravens, McClain has not missed a game.
